Nurses have one of the most difficult jobs in the world. Think about it: Nurses were on the frontlines of a global health crisis, running around saving lives when most people were sheltering in place. Then there's the fact that, even when not in the midst of an unprecedented outbreak, nurses spend their entire shift on their feet, doing rounds. The point is, no matter the situation, nurses are up on their feet (often for upwards of 12 hours at a time), ready to face the day head-on. It's because of this that we set out to uncover the best shoes for nurses. After all, many shoes aren't cut out for the task.

Being on your feet all day can not only be exhausting, but it can be painful, too — especially if you're not wearing the right shoes. Without ample cushioning, adequate shock absorption, a roomy toe box, and plenty of arch support, you could develop a variety of aches and pains, including blisters, corns, plantar fasciitis, and even joint pain throughout your lower body and back. Thankfully, there are shoes that help prevent these painful scenarios.

When looking for the best shoes for nurses, you'll want to prioritize options with spacious toe boxes, sufficient arch support, and cloud-like cushion — plus, any materials that are particularly easy to clean. (FYI: These make great gifts for nurses and nursing school graduates.)

Pros
  • Breathable mesh upper
  • Lightweight
  • Incredibly cushy
  • Sold in fun colorways
Cons
  • Some shoppers report that they're firmer than the previous Bondi
  • Some shoppers report that they run narrow
  • Some shoppers report that the arch support is too high

Hoka Bondis are renowned for their next-level cushioning that works as well for running marathons as it does for running rounds. So much so, that they've been awarded a seal of approval from the American Podiatric Medical Association.

“This is one of the best shoes HOKA offers and this is a brand that I often wear for long days on my feet doing surgeries,” says Central Park SOLE board-certified podiatrist and foot surgeon, Dr. Brad Schaeffer, who is the star of TLC’s My Feet Are Killing Me. “They provide a great balance for heel strike to toe-off with good stability and really adequate cushioning.”

Schaeffer isn’t the only fan of Hoka Bondi sneakers, though. Louisville, Kentucky-based family nurse practitioner, Jessica R. Perez, APRN, FNP-BC, swears by them, too. “They’re super comfortable, come in cute colors, and are very durable, so they’re worth the investment,” she says.

Pros
  • Made of recycled materials
  • Convenient slip-on silhouette (with laces for tailoring)
  • Incredibly comfortable for hours on end
  • Sleek silhouette
Cons
  • Some shoppers report that they run a half size big

Here we have an incredibly comfortable pair of lace-up sneakers that actually function as slip-ons. According to Perez, finding slip-on sneakers that don't stretch out is one of the best tricks for staying comfortable during long shifts.

While her long-time faves have been the Vans UltraRange Gore Shoe (which she's worn for years), these FitFlop Vitamin FF E01 sneakers fit the bill.

They're made with stretchy polyester uppers that hug your feet but move with them, all while never losing their compressive nature. As for the soles: They're cushy and propel you, so don't be surprised if you have a bounce in your step while wearing these comfy shoes.

  • Designed to be wiped clean
  • Built-in odor control
  • Sold in fun colors and prints
Cons
  • Some shoppers report that they run a half size small
  • Some shoppers report that they require a break-in period

Dansko Professional Clogs, which have the APMA seal of approval, have long been a favorite among nurses and podiatrists alike — and for good reason! “Their rocker bottom helps provide a good balance transfer between heel strike and toe-off, the forward motion while walking,” Schaeffer says. Because of this, they distribute the pressure of being on your feet all day, making for comfortable wear for hours on end.

“They have all the elements that one should look for in a proper fitting shoe, including a roomy and reinforced toe box (so your toes/feet don’t feel pinched or constricted), arch support, a padded instep, and a protective heel counter that allows the heel to move up and down freely while providing lateral stability,” Schaeffer adds.

Dominion Fertility nurse Ashley Vargas, LPN, who was a frontline worker in the INOVA ER during the pandemic, can attest. “These clogs provided a lot of support and comfort when I was on my feet for hours in the ER,” she says. “The heel support was something that I didn't know I needed until I started wearing these shoes and noticed how much better my feet felt.”

Another highlight? Their water-resistant patent leather design. “They’re so easy to clean — when COVID hit, I could easily wipe them down and disinfect them,” Vargas says.

Pros
  • Designed with full-sole shock absorption
  • Comfortable slip-on silhouette (despite having laces)
  • Can try for 60 days and return if you don't like them
Cons
  • They're new, so they haven't been widely reviewed yet
  • Not listed as water resistant

For those that love the look and feel of sock-like knit sneakers, Schaeffer recommends the newly-released GDEFY MATeeM Athletic Shoes. “These active shoes are made with ‘Corrective Fit orthotics’ and are designed with great shock absorption, including cushioning and stability for comfort,” he says. “As I always refer to our feet as the body’s shock absorbers, this brand has a patented system that claims it absorbs the shock and converts it into renewed energy to keep you on your feet longer.”

Pros
  • Waterproof
  • Breathable
  • Easy to clean
  • Very comfortable
Cons
  • Open heel, which some providers don't allow
  • Holes on side of shoes, which could allow spills in

Schaeffer is quick to point out that medical professionals love their Crocs. “Not only do they have cushioned footbeds that massage your feet, they’re also breathable, have great slip-resistant soles, are water resistant, and, importantly, they’re easy to clean,” he quips. While he particularly recommends the often-sold-out Women's Mercy Work Clog, the Crocs Bistro Clog is just as great (it has over 40,000 5-star reviews on Amazon). The only difference is that, where the Mercy Work Clog is fully enclosed, the Bistro Clog has air vents on the sides, which could potentially let spilled fluids in. On the plus side, though, they’re more breathable.

Cons

Depending on the requirements of your nursing job, Vargas says the Sketchers Work Relaxed Fit: Ultra Flex SR are a good option. “They’re very comfortable during long wear, but the knit material doesn’t hold up to all hospital spills,” she admits. As such, she recommends them specifically for slower shifts or for nurses who don’t come in contact with excess fluids. That said, if they get dirty, you can wash them by hand and let them air dry, and they’ll maintain their comfortable shape.

Pros
  • Waterproof design
  • Lab tested for anti-slip soles
  • Made with antimicrobial vegan rubber
Cons

  • Some shoppers report that the rubber material digs into feet

Prefer waterproof shoes for your time on the job? The GALES Women's Frontline Work Shoes look like slip-on Vans or Keds, but are made of stain-proof synthetic rubber. To prevent them from getting sweaty, there are two air holes along the instep of each shoe. Additionally, they're lined with Ortholite insoles, so they cushion any and all impact the day brings.

Pros
  • Fun and sparkly
  • Waterproof
  • Can be worn two ways
Cons
  • Glitter can flake off over time
  • Holes on top of shoes, which some providers don't allow

While all Crocs are beloved for their cushy EVA footbeds that make for all-day comfort, Vargas recommends the Classic Glitter Clog most of all — so long as you're not in a high-fluid-impact role. "In the ER, we were highly encouraged not to wear open-heel shoes like Crocs, but in my new role, within a fertility private practice where it's more of a controlled atmosphere, they're my go-to. They're comfortable and sold in so many great colors, which makes it fun when most medical shoes are plain. Plus, in fertility, I like to bring a little bit more joy to my attire, and my patients love my sparkly pink Crocs — I literally don't go a day without someone complimenting them."

What to look for when shopping for the best shoes for nurses

linebreak

When shopping for shoes as a nurse (or for a nurse you know and love), you'll want to keep a few things in mind. Look for:

✔️ A cushy-yet-lightweight silhouette: When you're on your feet all day, the last thing you want is to feel dragged down by your shoes. Additionally, you don't want to feel like there's a firm brick beneath your foot with each step. With this in mind, look for shoes that have ergonomic cushioning that fits the natural contour of your soles, and prioritize those with 8 mm of cushioning or more.

✔️ Ample arch support: The longer you stand, the more your arches will take on that stress. As such, opting for shoes with built-in arch support is a fantastic idea. That said, if you have a pair of shoes that you love but simply wish they offered more in the arch area, there's always the option for insoles.

Vionic Insoles ($40+) — which are available in Active, Relief, and Slimfit options — can be added to shoes and sneakers that have flatter insoles,” says nationally-renowned podiatrist Dr. Jackie Sutera, DPM. “These insoles will provide cushion, arch support, and shock absorption.”

That said, if your biggest concern is joint pain associated with being on your feet all day, Schaeffer recommends Dr. Scholl’s Prevent Pain Lower Body Protective Insoles ($18). “They’re designed (and clinically proven) to reduce the leading cause of pain in key lower body joints — your feet, knees, and lower back — from reoccurring, so they’re perfect for nurses who are on their feet most of the day,” he says.

✔️ An easy-to-clean material: Generally speaking, nurses fare best with fluid-resistant and waterproof shoes, as they'll hold up the best over time.

✔️ A slip-resistant sole: Since hospitals and medical spaces are equipped with hard floors and prone to spills, it's important to look for shoes with slip-resistant soles to prevent accidental falls.

FAQ

linebreak
  • What kind of shoes are nurses supposed to wear?
Nurses will be the most comfortable in breathable, supportive, cushioned shoes that are resistant to liquids, if not fully waterproof. As comfortable and convenient as slip-on mesh and knit shoes are, Schaeffer says that "lace-up shoes offer the ability to adjust the fit during the day and may be a better option for longer stretches of time."
  • What type of sneaker is best for nurses?
While an APMA Seal of Acceptance is a great indicator, typically, sneakers that are made with breathable, fluid-resistant materials, supportive arches, slip-resistant outsoles, and ample cushioning will be the most comfortable. That said, no two feet are identical, so it's important to consider your personal preferences when selecting your ideal shoe.
  • What is the best shoe for standing all day?
In short, one that's designed to evenly distribute pressure and absorb shock. Typically, these shoes are categorized as running or walking shoes, while lifting shoes will likely be too firm for all-day comfort.
