29 Country Music Couples With Truly Iconic Love Stories
Here's how all your favorite country crooners met their special someones.
If you watch country music awards shows, then you know one of the best parts is seeing all the best country music couples walk the red carpet. After all, many of those partners have inspired your favorite country love songs, so even if they're not celebrities in their own right, they're still pretty iconic. For instance, did you know that Brad Paisley wrote "My Miracle" about his wife, Kimberly Williams Paisley? Or that Miranda Lambert's "Settling Down" was inspired by her husband, Brendan McLoughlin? Or that Blake Shelton's "We Can Reach the Stars" was written for Gwen Stefani? Clearly, the love between these pairs is the real deal.
Of course, the real-life love stories behind those beautiful country ballads are even more swoon-worthy. Some of the most popular couples in country music started off as childhood sweethearts, while others went from co-creators to something a whole lot more. A few famous pairs even broke up at one point before eventually finding their way back to each other, because—as Luke Combs so wisely said—"some things just go better together and probably always will." Here are the romantic stories of how country's biggest stars met their future partners.
Faith Hill and Tim McGraw
Ever since they met back in 1994, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw have become known as one of the most iconic couples in country music. The two first connected at a showcase for up-and-coming country artists, but it wasn't until Faith joined Tim on tour two years later that sparks really started to fly. After a whirlwind romance, the singers had a surprise wedding in October 1996, and they're now the proud parents of three daughters: Gracie, Audrey, and Maggie. The two recently shared the screen as Margaret and James Dutton on 1883.
Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood
Though Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood first met in 1987 while recording a demo track, things didn't return romantic for the pair until 2002... mostly because they were married to other people when they first met. Following their respective divorces, the two fell in love, and in December 2005, Garth and Trisha tied the knot. They don't have any kids of their own, but together they've raised Garth's three daughters from his first marriage: Taylor, August, and Allie.
Shania Twain and Frédéric Thiébaud
Following Shania Twain's dramatic divorce from her first husband, Robert Lange, the country star found love again with Swiss business executive Frédéric Thiébaud in 2009. Strangely enough, Frédéric's first wife, Marie-Anne, was once Shania's best friend... that is, until she found out Marie-Anne was reportedly having an affair with Robert. Shania and Frédéric turned to each other for comfort, and on New Year's Day 2011, they became husband and wife. Over a decade later, the two are still going strong.
Chris Stapleton and Morgane Stapleton
While working as songwriters in Nashville back in 2003, Chris Stapleton and Morgane Stapleton (née Hayes) crossed paths, and sparks were flying right away. Four years later in October 2007, they said their "I dos," and they've since welcomed five children: Waylon, Ada, Macon, and Samuel, and another son, who was born in 2019 but whose name remains private.
Thomas Rhett and Lauren Akins
The love story of Thomas Rhett and Lauren Akins goes way back, as the two lovebirds met when they were in just first grade. They briefly dated as teenagers before going their separate ways, but in 2011, they reconnected again at a graduation party for Lauren's sister. By October 2012, Thomas and Lauren were married, and they've since welcomed four daughters: Willa, Ada, Lennon, and Lillie.
Kane Brown and Katelyn Jae Brown
Kane Brown and Katelyn Jae Brown first met after she came to one of his shows in 2015. Though Jae lived in Orlando at the time and Brown was based in Miami, he was instantly smitten and determined to make things work. After a few years of dating, the couple tied the knot in October 2018, and since then, they've had two daughters, Kingsley and Kodi.
Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman
Fellow Australians Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman first met in 2005 at a Hollywood event honoring Australians in the entertainment business. Following a whirlwind romance, the couple took a walk down the aisle in June 2006, and they've been going strong ever since, even welcoming two daughters together, Sunday and Faith. Nicole also has two children from her previous marriage to Tom Cruise, Isabella and Connor.
Luke Bryan and Caroline Boyer
Though Luke Bryan and Caroline Boyer started dating while they were still in college, the two actually broke up for some time. Luckily, the pair ended up reconciling after graduation, and in December 2006, they made things official. Together they've welcomed two sons, Thomas and Tatum, and in 2017, they adopted their nephew and two nieces following the death of Luke's sister and brother-in-law.
Brad Paisley and Kimberly Williams-Paisley
Funnily enough, the real-life love story between Brad Paisley and Kimberly Williams-Paisley began before the actress even knew it. In 1991, Brad fell in love with Kimberly while watching her star in Father of the Bride, and a decade later, Brad cast her in his music video for 2001's "I'm Gonna Miss Her." His persistence paid off, and in March 2003, the pair got married. Brad and Kimberly are now the proud parents of two sons, William and Jasper.
Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher
In 2008, Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher were just kicking off their respective careers when they went on their first date. Fortunately, the country singer and the Canadian hockey star hit it off, and in July 2010, the duo tied the knot. Over a decade later, they're now a family of four, thanks to their two sons, Isaiah and Jacob.
Reba McEntire and Rex Linn
Reba McEntire and Rex Linn began dating back in January 2020. They got to know each other with daily "coffee camps." The country music superstar and CSI: Miami actor have the cutest nicknames: "Tater Tot" and "Sugar Tot."
Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani
Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton first became friends as coaches on The Voice in 2014 while they were still married to other people. However, the two filed for divorce in 2015 within a month of each other, and going through divorces at the same time brought them even closer. By the end of 2015, Stefani and Shelton were a confirmed couple, and in July 2021, they got married at long last.
Miranda Lambert and Brendan McLoughlin
Speaking of Blake Shelton, his ex-wife—fellow country star Miranda Lambert—has found love again, too. Miranda met her second husband, Brendan McLoughlin, while performing on Good Morning America with her band, The Pistol Annies, in 2018. Brendan was an NYPD officer at the time, and in February 2019, Miranda shocked fans by announcing that she'd married Brendan a month earlier. Over three years later, the two still seem as in love as ever.
Jimi Westbrook and Karen Fairchild
Little Big Town band members Jimi Westbrook and Karen Fairchild never expected to fall in love when the group first formed in 1998... probably because Karen was married to someone else at the time. However, after Karen's divorce, things turned romantic for the bandmates, and in May 2006, they became husband and wife. Just about four years later, they expanded their family by welcoming their son, Elijah.
Dierks Bentley and Cassidy Black
Dierks Bentley and Cassidy Black first crossed paths while they were eighth graders growing up in Arizona. The couple dated on-and-off for years while Dierks's country music career took off, and in December 2005, they finally decided to make things official by eloping. Since then, the longtime lovers have had three children together: Evelyn, Jordan, and Knox.
Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd
After co-writing Tim McGraw's "Last Turn Home" together back in 2013, Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd discovered that they had chemistry outside of the studio as well. The country stars eventually became an item, and in March 2018, the Maren and Ryan tied the knot in Nashville. Two years later, they welcomed their son, Hayes, and became a family of three.
Mickey Guyton and Grant Savoy
Back in 2010, Mickey Guyton and Grant Savoy were introduced by Grant's stepsister, who happens to be one of Mickey's close friends. The singer and the attorney clicked right away, and after several years of dating (and an impressive four-year engagement) Mickey and Grant tied the knot in June 2017. They now share a son, Grayson, who was born in 2021.
Brandi Carlile and Catherine Shepherd
When Brandi Carlile and Catherine Shepherd met backstage at a charity event in 2009, the musician and the philanthropist had actually already been in contact for a year. The connection was immediate, and in September 2012, Brandi and Catherine made their union official. Nearly a decade later, they're still as in love as ever as they raise their two children, Evangeline and Elijah.
Walker Hayes and Laney Beville Hayes
After meeting way in elementary school, Walker Hayes and Laney Beville Hayes officially became an item as teens. They ended up splitting for a bit after graduating from college, but sparks were flying again when they reunited at a mutual friend's wedding. In June 2004, they got married themselves, and though they experienced the loss of their infant daughter, Oakleigh, in 2018, the country singer and his wife share six other children together: Lela, Chapel, Baylor, Beckett, Loxley, and Everly.
Luke Combs and Nicole Combs
Luke Combs and Nicole Combs (née Hocking) met for the first time at the Key West Songwriters Festival in 2016, when Luke was still a struggling musician. The lovebirds welcomed their first child in June of 2022, and are expecting a second in 2023.
